Rockefeller Center is a massive complex of commercial buildings in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Located between 48th and 51st Streets and Fifth and Sixth Avenues, it covers an area of 22 acres and houses a variety of businesses, shops, and restaurants. The centerpiece of Rockefeller Center is the 70-story skyscraper at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, also known as the Comcast Building, but more commonly referred to as “30 Rock”. The complex is named after John D. Rockefeller Jr., who oversaw its construction in the 1930s.

The complex was developed during the Great Depression as part of an effort to revitalize the city’s economy. It was built between 1931 and 1939, and opened to the public in May of that year. The complex includes 19 buildings, the most famous of which are the RCA Building (now known as the GE Building), 30 Rockefeller Plaza, and the Rockefeller Center Ice Skating Rink. The GE Building, at 70 stories, is one of the tallest buildings in New York City.

Rockefeller Center is a popular destination for tourists, with over 250,000 visitors per day during the holiday season. During this time, the famous Christmas tree, a tradition that dates back to 1931, is lit up in the plaza, and the ice skating rink is open to the public. The tree is typically a Norway spruce, chosen from the front yards of people in the tri-state area who submit their trees for consideration. After the holidays, the tree is recycled and turned into lumber for Habitat for Humanity.

The complex is also home to a number of art installations, including the famous Atlas statue, which depicts the Greek god Atlas holding the celestial sphere on his shoulders. The statue stands at the entrance to 30 Rockefeller Plaza and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in New York City.

Visitors can also take tours of Rockefeller Center, which offer a behind-the-scenes look at the complex’s history and architecture. The tours include stops at the observation deck on the 70th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, as well as the iconic Rainbow Room, a restaurant and event space that offers stunning views of the city.

Rockefeller Center has been the site of numerous historic events over the years, including the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony and the live telecast of the Today Show, which is broadcast from the complex every weekday morning. The complex has also been used as a backdrop for several movies and TV shows, including 30 Rock, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and Elf.

Aside from its cultural significance, Rockefeller Center is also an important commercial center, with a number of offices, restaurants, and shops located within the complex. The underground concourse, known as the “City Within a City,” is a popular shopping destination for both tourists and locals, featuring over 100 stores and restaurants.

Overall, Rockefeller Center is a must-see destination for anyone visiting New York City. Its iconic architecture, art installations, and cultural significance make it one of the city’s most beloved landmarks.
