Zoo

Honolulu Zoo is a popular attraction located in Queen Kapiolani Park in Waikiki, Honolulu. It was founded in 1877 and is home to over 900 animals from more than 300 species. It covers an area of around 42 acres and is open every day except Christmas Day. The zoo is a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages, with plenty of opportunities to see exotic and fascinating animals up close.

History

The Honolulu Zoo was originally founded as a botanical garden and named Kapiolani Park Zoo. It was later renamed the Honolulu Zoo in 1952, and since then it has undergone numerous renovations and expansions. Today, the zoo is home to a diverse range of animal species from around the world, and it continues to be an important cultural and educational institution in Hawaii.

Exhibits

The Honolulu Zoo is divided into several different exhibits, each featuring animals from different parts of the world. Some of the highlights include:

African Savanna: This exhibit features animals from the African continent, including zebras, giraffes, and African wild dogs. Visitors can get up close and personal with these majestic animals, watching them graze and interact with each other in a recreated savanna environment.

Australasia: The Australasia exhibit is home to a variety of animals from Australia, New Zealand, and other parts of the Pacific region. Some of the animals on display here include wallabies, kangaroos, and tree kangaroos, as well as a wide range of bird species.

Island Pacific: This exhibit features animals from the Pacific Islands, including the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, as well as tropical birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Visitors can also see several species of Hawaiian fish in the aquarium displays.

Primate Islands: The Primate Islands exhibit is home to several species of primates, including orangutans, gibbons, and colobus monkeys. Visitors can watch the primates swinging and climbing through the trees in a naturalistic environment.

Other exhibits include the Tiger exhibit, the Hawaiian Rainforest exhibit, and the Tortoise exhibit, among others. Each exhibit offers a unique and educational experience for visitors.

Events

The Honolulu Zoo offers a variety of events throughout the year, including Zoo Camps for kids, family-friendly movie nights, and themed events like Boo at the Zoo during Halloween. There are also behind-the-scenes tours available for those who want to learn more about the animals and their habitats. The zoo is also available for private events, such as weddings and corporate events.

Conservation

The Honolulu Zoo is committed to conservation and is involved in a number of programs to help protect endangered species and their habitats. The zoo participates in several Species Survival Plans, which aim to increase the populations of endangered species in captivity, and it is also involved in numerous conservation research projects. In addition, the zoo offers educational programs for visitors of all ages, helping to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the world’s wildlife and their habitats.

Conclusion

The Honolulu Zoo is a must-visit destination for animal lovers and families visiting Hawaii. With its diverse range of animal exhibits, educational programs, and commitment to conservation, it offers a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages. Whether you’re interested in learning more about the unique animals of Hawaii or exploring the wilds of Africa, the Honolulu Zoo has something for everyone.
