Construction of the Berlin TV Tower began in 1965, and it was opened to the public on October 3, 1969. The tower was built to improve television reception in East Berlin and to provide a symbol of the technical and scientific prowess of the German Democratic Republic (GDR).
The Berlin TV Tower was designed by architects Hermann Henselmann, Jörg Streitparth, and Fritz Dieter. The tower has a diameter of 40 meters at the base and tapers to 8 meters at the top. The tower is made up of two main parts: the concrete shaft and the steel sphere.

The steel sphere of the tower is 168 meters tall and houses various broadcasting equipment. The sphere is covered in stainless steel panels that reflect the sky, giving the tower a unique appearance. At night, the tower is illuminated with various colored lights, making it visible from many parts of the city.
The Berlin TV Tower has become a popular tourist attraction in Berlin. Visitors can take an elevator to the observation deck to enjoy panoramic views of the city. The observation deck features a bar and a souvenir shop. The tower’s restaurant offers fine dining and a unique atmosphere with its revolving platform.
The Berlin TV Tower has also played an important role in the history of Berlin. During the Cold War, the tower was a symbol of the East German government’s power and technical superiority. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the tower became a symbol of unity and reconciliation.
