Show Theatre

Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is one of the most iconic landmarks in Singapore. Located in the heart of the city, it is a world-class performing arts center that offers a wide range of cultural and entertainment experiences. Opened in 2002, it has become a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists.

The Esplanade comprises two main performance venues, the Concert Hall and the Theatre. The Concert Hall is a 1,600-seat auditorium that hosts orchestral concerts, operas, and other large-scale productions. The Theatre, on the other hand, is a more intimate space with a seating capacity of 2,000, which is used for plays, musicals, and other performing arts events.

One of the key features of the Esplanade is its stunning architecture. Designed by DP Architects and Michael Wilford & Partners, it has been described as resembling two durian fruits, a local delicacy known for its spiky exterior and pungent aroma. The unique design has earned the Esplanade the nickname of “The Durian” among locals.

The exterior of the building is covered in thousands of aluminum sunshades, which not only give it a distinctive appearance but also serve a functional purpose. The sunshades help to reduce the amount of heat and glare that enters the building, making it more energy-efficient and comfortable for visitors.

Inside the Esplanade, there are numerous spaces for visitors to explore. The concourse, for instance, is a vast open area that connects the various performance venues and serves as a gathering place for visitors. It features a range of restaurants, cafes, and shops selling souvenirs and cultural artifacts.

The Esplanade also has several smaller performance spaces, such as the Recital Studio, which is used for chamber music concerts, and the Theatre Studio, which is used for experimental theater and dance performances. There is also an outdoor performance space called the Waterfront, which hosts concerts, festivals, and other events.

One of the main goals of the Esplanade is to promote and showcase the cultural diversity of Singapore. It features a wide range of performances that showcase various art forms, including music, dance, theater, and visual arts. The programming is designed to appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds, making it a truly inclusive destination.

The Esplanade also plays an important role in promoting arts education in Singapore. It offers a range of educational programs and workshops for schools and community groups, aimed at fostering a greater appreciation of the arts and helping to develop the next generation of artists.

In addition to its cultural offerings, the Esplanade is also a popular destination for food and drink. It features a range of restaurants and cafes that serve local and international cuisine, as well as a rooftop bar with stunning views of the city skyline. The food and beverage offerings at the Esplanade are designed to complement the cultural experience, making it a great place to enjoy a meal or drink before or after a performance.

The Esplanade is also a popular destination for tourists visiting Singapore. Its iconic architecture and cultural programming make it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the arts and culture of Singapore. It is also conveniently located near other popular tourist attractions, such as the Merlion Park and the Marina Bay Sands.

Overall, the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is a world-class performing arts center that has become an integral part of Singapore’s cultural landscape. Its unique architecture, diverse programming, and commitment to arts education make it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the arts and culture of Singapore.

Furthermore, the Esplanade has also played a significant role in the development of the performing arts scene in Singapore. Prior to its opening, there were limited venues for performing arts events, and the lack of suitable venues often meant that many international performances bypassed Singapore altogether. The Esplanade changed this by providing a state-of-the-art venue that could accommodate large-scale productions, as well as smaller, more intimate performances.

In addition, the Esplanade has helped to nurture local talent and support the development of Singaporean arts and culture. It has provided a platform for emerging artists and performers to showcase their work, and has helped to raise the profile of Singaporean artists both locally and internationally. Through its various educational programs and initiatives, the Esplanade has also helped to inspire and nurture the next generation of artists, ensuring that the arts continue to thrive in Singapore.

Another notable feature of the Esplanade is its commitment to sustainability. The building incorporates numerous environmentally friendly features, such as solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and energy-efficient lighting and air conditioning systems. The Esplanade also works closely with its suppliers and partners to promote sustainability and reduce waste.

FAQ's

What happens when a performance is cancelled or postponed?

When a show is cancelled, ticket buyers will be duly notified by the event organiser through the event organiser's authorised ticketing agent, media or any other applicable communication channels. Information will be provided on where and when you can get your refund. Refunds are not applicable for postponed performances.

Do I have to purchase a ticket for my child?

Yes. Please note that we have a minimum age requirement of 6 years and above at our performance venues, unless otherwise stated. Infants or children without tickets will not be admitted.

Can I upgrade or downgrade my current ticket(s) or seat(s)?

You can upgrade your ticket(s) or seat(s) to a higher category as long as there is no change to the performance date and time, unless otherwise stated. Please contact the authorised ticketing agent for more details. Unfortunately, downgrading of ticket(s) or seat(s) is not allowed.

What does restricted view mean?

This means that your view of the stage will be partially obstructed. Seats that have a restricted view will be made available only when the need arises because sightlines are not as favourable as seats at other price categories. You will know which seats have a restricted view when you book tickets, as these seats will be indicated clearly by the promoters or event organisers.

What do I need to bring when I collect my ticket(s)?

You will need photo identification.

Can I get someone else to collect my ticket(s) for me?

Yes you can. The person who is collecting the ticket(s) must produce 1) his or her own photo identification, 2) a letter of authorisation signed by the credit cardholder whose card was used to purchase the tickets and 3) a photocopy of the credit cardholder's photo identification.

What must I check on my ticket(s) after I collect them?

Please check the event title, date, time and price of ticket(s) to ensure that the tickets have not been tampered with, defaced or torn.

What’s a booking fee?

A booking fee is a standard practice by ticketing companies worldwide to help support investment in technology and other operational expenses. This ensures that the system is maintained at a secure, speedy and robust level, providing an efficient ticket-buying experience. Booking fee applies to all ticket bookings, regardless of the channel of purchase or method of collection. Booking fees may vary across ticketing agents.
