Palace

Iolani Palace, located in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a historic building that was once the royal residence of the Hawaiian monarchs. Built in 1882 during the reign of King Kalakaua, the palace served as the seat of government and the residence of the royal family until the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893. Today, the palace is a popular tourist attraction and is also listed as a National Historic Landmark.

History of Iolani Palace:

The story of Iolani Palace begins in 1874 when King Kalakaua came to power. The new king was a great patron of the arts and he wanted to create a grand royal residence that would reflect the wealth and power of the Hawaiian monarchy. He commissioned architects Thomas J. Baker and Charles J. Wall to design the new palace, and construction began in 1879.

The palace was completed in 1882 at a cost of $340,000, making it one of the most expensive buildings of its time. The palace was furnished with the finest materials, including Koa wood furniture and chandeliers made of crystal and gold leaf.

The palace quickly became the center of Hawaiian government and the royal residence. It was the site of many important events in Hawaiian history, including the coronations of King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani, as well as many state dinners and balls.

In 1893, a group of American businessmen overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy and established a provisional government. The palace was seized by the new government, and Queen Liliuokalani was imprisoned in an upstairs bedroom. The queen was eventually released, but the palace was never used as a royal residence again.

In 1969, the palace was designated a National Historic Landmark, and in 1978, it was restored to its former glory. Today, visitors can tour the palace and learn about the history of the Hawaiian monarchy.

Touring Iolani Palace:

Visitors to Iolani Palace can take a guided or self-guided tour of the palace. The palace is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The tour begins in the basement, where visitors can view the palace’s original kitchen and laundry rooms. From there, visitors can take the grand staircase to the second floor, where they can view the throne room, state dining room, and the private quarters of the royal family.

One of the most interesting rooms in the palace is the Imprisonment Room, where Queen Liliuokalani was held after the overthrow of the monarchy. The room is decorated with the queen’s personal belongings, including a quilt that she made while she was imprisoned.

The palace also houses many historical artifacts, including photographs, paintings, and furniture from the Hawaiian monarchy. The palace’s collection of Hawaiian crown jewels is particularly impressive, and includes a gold and diamond crown, scepter, and sword that were used by the Hawaiian monarchs.

In addition to touring the palace, visitors can also take a guided tour of the palace grounds. The palace is surrounded by beautiful gardens, including the Coronation Garden, which was planted to commemorate King Kalakaua’s coronation in 1883.

Conclusion:

Iolani Palace is a historic building that is a must-see for anyone visiting Honolulu. The palace’s grand architecture, luxurious furnishings, and historical artifacts make it one of the most interesting attractions in Hawaii. A visit to Iolani Palace is a chance to learn about the rich history of the Hawaiian monarchy and to see the opulence and grandeur of a bygone era.

What an amazing place! If you're ever in Hawaii, don't miss this. This place is stunning and has a rich, but tragic history. Staff is absolutely amazing. This is a very well-organized event. It is very informative to listen to the audio tour. We paid for an earlier time, but Doreen helped us move it and was very gracious! Thank you for such a pleasant visit!
