Seahorses and Pipefish

There are nearly 50 species of seahorses, from the smallest at just 2.5cm to the largest to the Big Bellied Seahorse, which is around 12 times this size.

Although the Latin genus name for Seahorse is Hippocampus, which means ‘horse monster’, we don’t think our seahorses are monsters at all. We think they are some of the most beautiful creatures in the seas!

The male seahorse looks after the brood of babies in his pouch, so the female can start producing a new batch of eggs immediately, to increase the total number of young the pair create.

Things to Do

  • Find out why the seahorse is endangered in the wild
  • Learn how and why they hold onto the seas bedding plants
  • Watch our beautiful seahorses in Seahorse Nursery
  • Find out why seahorses reproduce every 3 months!
  • See how The SEA LIFE Trust and SEA LIFE work to breed, rescue and protect seahorses

Seahorses

You can find seahorses in oceans all over the world! There are over 40 species. Some live on coral reefs, others amoungst mangrove roots and many life in seagrass meadows. Pigmy Seahorses are as tiny as your little finger nail, but Big-belly Seahorses will be even bigger than your hand!

Their Ancient Greek name is Hippocampus, which means ‘horse sea monster’. But we don’t think our seahorses are monsters at all!

Unfortunately, seahorses are at risk of extinction due to the pollution and destruction of their habitat. 150 million seahorses are also captured and killed every year to use in traditional medicine. SEA LIFE campaigns to help protect vital seahorse habitats.

Pipefish

Pipefish are masters of disguise; their slim, elegant bodies look just like the seagrasses and seaweeds in which they live.

Like Seahorses and Seadragons they prey on tiny plankton which they suck up food through their straw-like snouts at lightening speed. Look for the tell-tale puff of shredded shell from their gills when they’ve just caught a tasty morsel!

Turtles

There are eight different species of sea turtles alive today. Five of them live in the Mediterranean and two of them, the Caretta Caretta and Chelonia Mydas, use Turkey’s coastlines for nesting.

Although many turtles lay between 100 and 200 eggs each time they nest, nearly all species are on the endangered list

Caretta Caretta Sea Turtle

The Caretta Caretta Sea Turtle is omnivorous, feeding mainly on bottom-dwelling invertebrates. It has a longerlist of prey than any other sea turtle. Food consumed by these creatures include sponge, jelly fish, Horse Shoe Crabs and oysters. Their large and powerful jaws serve as an effective tool for dismantling prey.

Newly emerged hatchlings are carnivorous and eat macro plankton. In contrast, immature juveniles and adults are commonly found in sea grass meadows as they are herbivorous grazers.

Baby Caretta Caretta hatch within 45-60 days depending on the sand temperature. Sex determination is dependent upon the incubation temperature, therefore there is an optimal incubation temperature that ranges between 26°C-32°C. The male sex is determined at cooler temperatures.

What can you do to help sea turtles

  • Avoid using motorcycles and building cafes or restaurants at the nesting beach.
  • Turn out lights visible from the beach.
  • Reduce the amount of garbage you produce and clean up any trash you see on the beach.
  • Be aware of sea turtlenesting areas and avoid nesting and hatching turtles.
  • Turn out lights visible from beach.
  • Do not touch baby sea turtles on their way to the sea.
  • Do not leave your pets uncontrolled at the beach.
  • Do not construct campfires on the beach.
  • Remove recreational equipment, such as lounge chairs, cabanas, umbrellas and boats from the beach at night.

SEA LIFE TRUST

PROTECTING THE WORLD’S OCEANS

SEA LIFE TRUST is a registered charity (no. 1175859) working globally to protect the world’s oceans and the amazing marine life that lives within them. SEA LIFE TRUST’s vision is of a world where our seas are healthy, protected and full of diverse life.

In partnership with the global SEA LIFE aquarium chain, we are able to reach a huge audience. We run inspiring conservation campaigns and fund projects and education programmes that champion the need for plastic-free oceans, sustainable fishing, effective Marine Protected Areas and an end to over-exploitation of marine life.

We also own and operate our own marine wildlife sanctuaries.

Creating the world’s first beluga whale sanctuary

The SEA LIFE TRUST is pleased to announce that thanks to a very generous donation from Merlin Entertainments we are building the world’s first beluga whale sanctuary in Iceland!

In early 2019 two previously captive belugas, Little White and Little Grey, will begin an epic 6,000 mile journey that will take them from a Shanghai aquarium to a new ocean home in a beautiful Icelandic bay.

This highly significant event will be the first time that captive beluga whales have ever been released to an ocean sanctuary and it is only because of the support we receive from our project partners – SEA LIFE, Merlin Entertainments and Whale and Dolphin Conservation, that Little White and Little Grey are able to take this significant journey.

All of us who care deeply about the welfare of whales and dolphins hope that it will signal a more positive future for these amazing animals.
