The USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park is a popular attraction located in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This historic site preserves the legacy of the USS Bowfin, a submarine that was launched during World War II and went on to participate in several successful missions before being decommissioned in 1947. Today, visitors can tour the submarine and explore the museum and park to learn more about the history of the USS Bowfin and the brave sailors who served on board.

The USS Bowfin was launched on December 7, 1942, just one year after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The submarine was named after the bowfin fish, a fierce predator known for its aggressive hunting tactics. The crew of the USS Bowfin adopted the motto “Silent Service – Deadly Purpose” and went on to complete nine successful patrols in the Pacific Theater during the war.

After the war, the USS Bowfin was decommissioned and became part of the Pacific Reserve Fleet. However, in 1960, the submarine was transferred to the Submarine Force Pacific Fleet and towed to its current location at Pearl Harbor. In 1979, the USS Bowfin was opened to the public as a museum, giving visitors the opportunity to tour the submarine and learn about the history of submarine warfare.

The museum and park are operated by the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of the USS Bowfin and educating the public about the important role that submarines played in World War II. The association has worked tirelessly to restore the USS Bowfin to its original condition and has also created exhibits and displays that showcase the history of the submarine and its crew.

Visitors to the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park can tour the submarine and explore the museum and park to learn more about the history of submarine warfare. The self-guided tour of the submarine takes visitors through the cramped quarters of the vessel, providing a firsthand look at what life was like on board. Visitors can see the torpedo room, the engine room, and the cramped crew quarters, as well as the periscope and sonar equipment that was used to detect and track enemy ships.

The museum features exhibits that tell the story of the USS Bowfin and the brave sailors who served on board. Displays include artifacts, photographs, and personal accounts from the crew members who served on the submarine during World War II. Visitors can also learn about the history of submarine warfare and the important role that submarines played in the war effort.

In addition to the submarine and museum, the park features several outdoor exhibits and displays, including a memorial to the submariners who lost their lives during World War II. Visitors can also explore the surrounding area, which includes the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Missouri, and the Pacific Aviation Museum.

Overall, the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park is an important historical site that provides visitors with a firsthand look at the history of submarine warfare during World War II. By touring the submarine, exploring the museum, and learning about the brave sailors who served on board, visitors can gain a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices that were made during the war and the important role that submarines played in the Allied victory.
