FAQ's

How do I go to the Vondelpark?

If you are already in Amsterdam, the best way is to go by bike. Go to Leidseplein. If you are on foot, there is a bike rental company next to Paradiso near Leidseplein. From Leidseplein it is about 200 meters to the entrance of the park. If you come by public transport, take tram line 1 or 2. It is best to drive to the furthest point from the center, and from there to walk back to the city center. Ask the conductor for the Amstelveenseweg tram stop. It is not recommended to go by car. Parking around the park has to be done with a parking ticket, which are expensive. There is a parking garage next to the Marriott Hotel, street parking is best in Emmalaan.

How big is Vondel Park?

The Vondelpark measures 47 ha (70 acres). It is about 2 kilometers long and 400 meters wide. The water in the ponds is 2.5 meters below NAP (average sea level). A round of cycling along the outer paved trails is 3.2 km long (2 miles).

A short history

Around 1860 a new richer middle class arose, looking for a place to relax. A group of wealthy industrialists and bankers united and bought a large piece of land where the Vondelpark is now located. When it opened, the park was much smaller than it is today. The park has been expanded several times in the direction of Amstelveenseweg. The park was designed in the English Landscape style, by the famous landscape architect Zocher.

When is the best time for a Visit?

The park is open all year round (24 hours, 7 days) a week, and admission is free. If you like crowds, come on a sunny Sunday afternoon in the summer. Otherwise you walk on, further from the center it becomes much quieter. Out of season or in cool weather it is a lot quieter. Keep in mind that during prolonged rain there are many puddles and the unpaved paths are soft and muddy. On King's Day, April 27, there is a free market for children in the park. It is then very busy.

What is Vondel Park?

Vondelpark is the most visited park in Amsterdam (and perhaps in the Netherlands). If you are in Amsterdam, you should definitely visit this park. On a summer afternoon, the park is full of people strolling or sitting in the grass. If you are looking for peace and quiet, go deeper into the park. Further on it is much quieter.

What should I see in the Vondelpark?

During the summer months there are free concerts in the Open Air Theatre. Read the program on the posters at the entrances of the park. There are many children's playgrounds scattered throughout the park. In summer there is also a children's pool. There are many terraces where you can drink and eat. The most special things to see in the park: The statue of the poet Joost van den Vondel (the park's namesake) The Rosarium, a large rose garden The Stork's Nest, inhabited for many years ... and great nature in the middle of a busy city!

Where does the park's name come from?

Van Joost van den Vondel (1587 - 1679), he was a Dutch writer of poems and plays. Until the middle of the 20th century he was a famous and celebrated artist, except for Rembrandt, and was regarded as the Dutch Shakespeare. But since then he has been forgotten. In 1867 a statue of Vondel was placed in the Rij- en Wandelpark . From that time on, the park was called the Vondelspark and then the Vondelpark .
