OVERVIEW
Books and the sea – for interested students, there is no better combination. The calm serenity of the hot waves goes hand in hand with good reading in the hand, and it is enough to turn anyone into a student from time to time. For Sharjah residents, this has become possible thanks to the Sharjah Beach Library Initiative. What is it about and where has this program been presented so far in the emirate? Let’s find out. There is nothing better than a day at the beach and while you are at it, take it out with a good book to read. This is now possible at Al Khan Beach in Sharjah thanks to the Sharjah Beach Library program launched by the Sharjah World Book Capital (SWBC) office. The Al Khan Beach Library is open to seafarers earlier this month to promote and inculcate the habit of reading among members of the public as part of the annual Sharjah World Book Capital 2019 celebrations.
Offering free reading materials in over 100 languages in a variety of languages for all ages, Al Khan Beach Library was launched in partnership with Knowledge without Borders (KwB), Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), Sharjah Municipality and the Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC). BEACH LIBRARY INITIATIVE
The Sharjah Beach Initiative is one of the many annual activities presented to celebrate Sharjah crowned World Book Capital 2019 by UNESCO – it is worth noting the important role of the emirate in supporting literature and promoting reading. Launched earlier this year, the Sharjah Beach Library Initiative is an organization that aims to instill the practice of reading in a diverse community. Launched by the Sharjah World Book Capital Office (SWBC Office), the program was launched in partnership with Knowledge without Borders (KwB) – a government organization to encourage children and parents to spend more time studying. Other participants include Sharjah Municipality, Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) and Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC). Ahmad Obaid Al Qaseer, COO of Shurooq, said the move reflects the respected cultural history of Sharjah, and recognizes that the initiative will encourage various business groups to establish community-based projects. Sharjah resident Faisal Shah Abdul Nazar, 32, a resident of Al Nahda, has welcomed the move. “The idea is good for children and adults. People from all walks of life went to the beach to rest. It is also good for them to read books. Children can learn to read at an early age, ”an Indian engineer told Gulf News. Filipino citizen Reyshane James Tejada said he would come to visit and bring friends.
AL KHAN BEACH
The first Sharjah Beach Initiative library was set up at Al Khan Beach. A move that seeks to break the stereotypes, that the act of learning should be limited to the traditional context, the original location of the library was a good approach. The beach is popular with locals with 600 meters of sand and a dedicated swimming pool. Cooked for all ages, the library contains over 100 articles in many languages. Suitable for all ages, the purpose of the initial launch was to make that information accessible to people from all walks of life. The first edition of the Sharjah Beach Library Initiative in Al Khan Beach also opened a Mobile Library. Carried in 4 × 4, a wheeled library can be installed at any public beach in Sharjah. Presented by KwB, the launch of the portable library is a continuation of the 2010 mobile library program by a cultural organization.
AL KHAN BEACH 2
The second phase of the campaign was launched in August 2019 at Al Khan Beach 2. With beachgoers and locals, the event saw book lovers, children and adults come together to tell stories from their favorite topics.
LADIES CLUB
The third location of the Sharjah Beach Library was at the Sharjah Ladies Club. Like its predecessors, the opening of the entertainment club featured a variety of games such as games, treasure hunts, competitions and live cooking shows for professional chefs.
