History
One of the oldest libraries in Sharjah, this public reading center was established in 1925 as the Qasimi Library by Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi. Originally, it was found in the Sharjah Fort and was used by the emperor to store his collection of books. After his reign, the library passed to Sheikh Saqr Bin Sultan Al Qasimi. He moved it to a new building in 1956, located in the courtyard of Sharjah Fort. The library was then acquired by several members of the Sharjah royal family before being transferred to his Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Governor of Sharjah. Under his direction, it was renamed the Sharjah Library in 1971 and relocated to the Sharjah Municipality building. This was not the end of library history by changing addresses. The library was moved to the Cultural Palace in 1984 and then to the Mawaileh area in 1993. It was not until later in 2011 that the top library in Sharjah found it to be a permanent home in Cultural Square. Currently, it is managed by the Sharjah Department of Culture and Information.
