10. Art and Culture Center
The Beginning
In light of the state’s lack of support for the arts, the concept of opening a public art center has been discussed for a while. The value of intellectual growth and creativity in the nation’s development strategy has gone unnoticed by successive governments. This demand served as the Thai Artists’ Network’s rallying cry in their fight to have a contemporary art center built, in order to keep up with global trends, satisfy national pride, and offer a venue for art and cultural learning in the context of the developing material culture. Government should provide funding to the art center for people since it is a non-profit organization. An “infrastructure for the brain” can be created by creating an art center. In other words, it offers the development of the “software” to match that of the “hardware”.
It makes sense to build an art center in the heavily youth-populated region of Pathumwan Junction because it may draw young people there to engage in artistic and cultural activities, learn about and express themselves, and become a part of their leisure activities.
The Movement
The project to establish the art center got underway in 1995 when Dr. Bhichit Rattakul, the governor of Bangkok, decided to work with the Jubilee Art Celebration Committee to build the “Bangkok Contemporary Art Centre” at the Pathumwan crossroads. When Bangkok chose a new governor in 2001, the project was put on hold. The project was reevaluated, and the funding came from private investors. It is now a commercial retail space. The press, numerous cultural organizations, artists, and other groups condemned the change.
In 2004, Apirak Kosayodhin was elected governor of Bangkok. The Artists’ Network presented the vision for the art center to him, and he agreed to have it constructed in accordance with the original concept’s design.
People’s art center
It had already been more than ten years since the campaign in favor of the Bangkok Art and Culture Center began. With the help and support of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the People’s Network for the Bangkok Art and Culture Center, construction finally started at the Pathumwan Junction site. The people of Bangkok now have access to a significant art hub. It is a location where people may come together, define culture, and create it.
