Historical Landmark

The Parliament of India is the supreme legislative body of the Republic of India. It is located in New Delhi, the capital city of India, and comprises two houses: the Rajya Sabha (Council of States) and the Lok Sabha (House of the People).

The Parliament building is an iconic structure in the heart of New Delhi, situated on the Sansad Marg. Designed by the British architect Edwin Lutyens, the building was completed in 1927 and originally served as the Council of State. After India gained independence from British rule in 1947, the building was converted into the Parliament of India.

The Parliament House is a circular building with a diameter of 170 metres and a height of 41 metres. It is made of sandstone and was designed to reflect Indian and Western architectural styles. The building is surrounded by a large circular lawn, which is used for ceremonial purposes.

The Parliament House has three main chambers: the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha and the Central Hall. The Lok Sabha is the lower house of the Parliament, with 545 members elected from constituencies across India. The Rajya Sabha is the upper house of the Parliament, with 245 members elected by the members of state legislative assemblies. The Central Hall is used for joint sittings of both houses of the Parliament, as well as for ceremonial occasions.

The Central Hall is one of the most iconic spaces in the Parliament House, and is often used for ceremonial events such as the swearing-in ceremony of the Prime Minister, or for special addresses by visiting heads of state. The Central Hall is also famous for its ceiling, which features a circular mural depicting the journey of India from ancient times to modern times.

The Parliament House is a working building, and it is often open to the public for tours. Visitors can observe parliamentary proceedings from the visitors’ gallery, and there are also guided tours of the building available. The Parliament Museum, which is located in the Parliament House, provides a fascinating insight into the history of the Indian Parliament, as well as the political history of India.

The Parliament of India plays a crucial role in the governance of India, and has the power to make laws, oversee government policies and hold the government accountable for its actions. The Parliament also has the power to impeach the President of India and other high officials of the government.

The Parliament House is not only a functional building, but also a symbol of India’s democracy and its rich history. It is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Indian politics and history, and a testament to India’s progress as a modern democratic nation.
