History of the Museum

The Hong Kong Space Museum was first established in 1980 as part of the Hong Kong Science Museum, but it wasn’t until 1986 that the museum was granted a separate building. The unique egg-shaped dome design was selected through an international competition, and it quickly became a landmark of the city.

The museum was closed in 2009 for a major renovation, and it reopened in 2017 with upgraded exhibits and facilities.

  1. Stanley Ho Space Theatre – The main attraction of the museum, the Stanley Ho Space Theatre features a 23-meter-diameter dome that serves as the screen for a range of space-themed shows. The theater can accommodate up to 300 people and uses the latest technology to provide an immersive viewing experience.
  2. Hall of Space Science – This exhibit showcases the latest space technology and equipment, including models of satellites, spacecraft, and space stations. Visitors can learn about the history of space exploration, as well as the latest developments in space science.
  3. Omnimax Theatre – The Omnimax Theatre features a giant, curved screen that provides an immersive viewing experience. Visitors can watch space-themed films that are projected onto the screen.
  4. Astronomical Observatory – The museum’s observatory features telescopes and other equipment that visitors can use to observe the stars and planets.
  5. Educational Programs – The Hong Kong Space Museum offers a range of educational programs for visitors of all ages, including workshops, lectures, and guided tours.

It is an excellent museum for children and adults who are interested in history. Most of the exhibits are available for you to try. Even on Wednesdays, admission is free. You must reserve 1 week in advance if you wish to watch the current 3D film screening. So we couldn't look at them.
