HOW IS THE JARDIN DES PLANTES CONNECTED TO THE MUSÉUM NATIONAL D'HISTOIRE NATURELLE (NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY)?

The Museum comprises 13 sites throughout France - 11 of which are open to the public - including the Jardin des Plantes, Zoological Park of Paris and the Musée de l'Homme (Museum of Mankind) in Paris. It is jointly supervised by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation and the Ministry for the Ecological Transition. Within the Jardin des Plantes, there are 6 venues that are open to the public: the Grande Galerie de l’Évolution (Gallery of Evolution), Galerie des Enfants (Children's Gallery), Galeries d’Anatomie comparée et de Paléontologie (Comparative Anatomy and Paleontology Galleries), Galerie de Géologie et de Minéralogie (Geology and Mineralogy Gallery), the Greenhouses of the Jardin des Plantes and the Ménagerie (the zoo of the Jardin des Plantes). Two venues also host a free cultural programme: the Museum’s Grand Lecture Hall [Amphithéâtre Verniquet] and the Gallery of Evolution auditorium. WHAT IS THE JARDIN DES PLANTES?

You are already at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle when you enter the Jardin des Plantes. The Jardin des Plantes is not a garden of the city of Paris, it is a botanical garden that forms the historic heart of the Museum. The origins of the Jardin des Plantes can be traced back to 1636, when Louis XIII made the decision to create the Royal Garden of Medicinal Plants. It was a place for taking walks, but it was also a place for studying and observing nature. Since 1793, it has been managed by the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, which today dedicates itself to carrying out scientific research on the natural world. WHEN CAN I FIND LOCKERS AND TABLES FOR EATING?

Free lockers are available for visitors in the Grande Galerie de l’Évolution, the Geology and Mineralogy Gallery and the Comparative Anatomy and Paleontology Galleries. Beware : Free lockers are closed. A baby-changing table is available in the toilets on the ground floor and 1st floor of the Grande Galerie de l’Évolution and in the toilets at the Ménagerie, the zoo of the Jardin des Plantes.

By sponsoring animals at the Ménagerie, you are supporting the conservation of endangered species and are helping to fund the project dedicated to renovating their spaces. For example, you can contribute to the orangutan enclosure extension project, which would allow Nénette, Théodora, Tamü, Banggi and Java to grow up in a space five times the size of their current one. Borneo orangutans have been classified as critically endangered by the IUCN since 2016.
