Humans are always anxious to know what the future holds for them. The new Museum of the Future is a unique initiative taken by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, as a part of one of the ambitious projects in the lead up to the Expo 2020. This LEED-certified building is designed by Killa Designs and is scheduled to be inaugurated in 2020. The Museum of the Future will be located near the Emirates Towers near Sheikh Zayed Road. It is expected to be a revolutionary building which will explore the future of artificial intelligence and other innovative technologies in Dubai. Apart from being a tourist attraction, the Museum of the Future will also provide a platform for advanced courses, specialised workshops, science conferences and prototype testing of the latest inventions and new startups.
The world is curious to know what the Museum of the Future will feature. Let us unfold the details of this mega project.
WORLD’S MOST COMPLEX STRUCTURE
The Museum of the Future Dubai is shaped like a lustrous silver oval with an open centre. The building looks like an eye being kept over the city. The art and poetry are the evident aspects of the building design of the Museum of the Future. The Arabic calligraphy including the quotes from the Prime Minister of UAE, Shiekh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, about the future is engraved on the exterior. At its launch, he had said that the museum will redefine how we share knowledge and information in the future.
“The future belongs to those who can imagine it, design it, and execute it. It isn’t something you await, but rather create.”
The exterior of the Museum of the Future is inspired by the aviation industry. It uses 890 stainless steel and fibreglass panels. Floors are the only horizontal surfaces in the building. According to the Museum of the Future architects, Killa Designs, the buildings with such a complex surface are normally rain screens. In this Museum of the Future, the envelope is doing the waterproofing, the airtightness, the structure and the lighting. The Museum of the Future Dubai is not meant to be based on the past. It is supposed to be an incubator for innovation and what the future would be like.
SEE THE FUTURE, CREATE THE FUTURE
The Museum of the Future is under construction in Dubai. Although the external structure is complete, work is still underway to get this highly anticipated project completed. Over 5 years of temporary exhibitions held at the World Government Summit have laid the foundation of the Museum of the Future. ‘See the Future, Create the Future’ is the project motto. This shows that the place will house innovation boosting facilities and design studios with a futuristic approach. The museum would feature exhibits of the future education system, advanced healthcare, smart cities, super efficient and fast transportation and government services.
Some of the devices associated with the project include a brain implant that can quite literally read thoughts, so you can eliminate multiple rounds of emails and other communications during meetings, a technological micro-pill that extracts nutrients required by your body and ejects all other waste, thereby helping to fight obesity and several other futuristic innovations.
THE INCUBATOR OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
According to experts, the rise of artificial intelligence will amplify human effectiveness. The highly evolved features of these computers might exceed human intelligence, learning capabilities, complex decision making and sophisticated analytics. The creators of the Museum of the Future have developed the place to be the incubator of the innovative ideas, inventions and entrepreneurs of the future.
THE MUSEUM OF THE FUTURE ACCELERATOR
Dubai’s Museum of the Future has launched a new accelerator programme. The aim is to attract technology companies. It can provide newer solutions for futuristic visitor experiences. The Museum of the Future Accelerator is a four-week program which will pair the world’s most exciting technology companies with the Museum of the Future team. The Accelerator program is devised as a part of the Dubai Future Accelerators, which is an undertaking of the Dubai Future Foundation. The program is categorised into three challenges – Advanced Wearables, AI Guides & Social Companions, and VR/AR Virtual experiences. Winners of this program will have the opportunity to develop technology for the museum’s launch.
The new accelerator program will involve contacting 15 companies in Dubai to determine their technology, develop pilot project proposals and compete for funded projects. These ideas could be incorporated into the inauguration of the Museum of the Future. The museum aims to give a deep insight into the future of the 21st century. It offers reality-based experiences of futuristic technologies to the visitors.
The 15 companies are encouraged to apply for one of the three above-mentioned challenges in the accelerator program.
THE FIRST CHALLENGE
It is based on advanced wearable devices which focus on using the combination of sensor devices, and applications to create an incredible visitor experience. The companies contacted include IDENTIFY Technology L.L.C. (UAE), IT-Serve.com (UAE), PoP-IQ (USA), and SENSORY (USA).
THE SECOND CHALLENGE
This challenge is based on AI Guides and Social Companions. The visitors will get personalized visitor experiences through the use of conversational chatbots. The companies contacted in this regard are Huawei (China), Snips (UK), Art Processors (Australia), and Unified Inbox (Russia).
THE THIRD CHALLENGE
This challenge is based on VR and AR Experiences. The visitors will get a dynamic interactive experience in the Museum of the Future. It can also be shared with people irrespective of digital and physical boundaries. The companies contacted are Digital Communication LLC (UAE), HOLOTRONICA (UK), SPACES (USA), and HTC VIVE (Taiwan).
According to Dr. Noah Raford, COO and futurist-in-chief at Dubai Future Foundation, “If you have a product or a solution which you think might help us solve the challenges that are part of the accelerators program, we look forward to your application and if successful, welcoming you to Dubai to help build the future together.”
The companies selected for the program will have unparalleled access to the resources, expertise, and staff of the Museum of the Future.
Undoubtedly, the rise of the tech and creative sector in Dubai will be the key to the future world. The inauguration of the Museum of the Future will be a milestone to make Dubai the world’s most innovative city in the next ten years.
