Takamaka Rum Distillery is a popular tourist destination in Seychelles, known for producing high-quality rum using traditional methods. The distillery is located on the island of Mahé and offers visitors an opportunity to learn about the rum-making process, sample the rum, and purchase bottles to take home.
History of Takamaka Rum Distillery
Takamaka Rum Distillery was founded in 2002 by two Seychellois brothers, Richard and Bernard d’Offay. The brothers were inspired by their grandfather’s homemade rum, which was a popular local drink in Seychelles.
The distillery was initially a small-scale operation, producing just a few hundred bottles of rum each year. However, it quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality rum, and demand grew rapidly. Today, the distillery produces more than 30,000 bottles of rum each year and is a major player in Seychelles’ tourism industry.
Rum-Making Process
Takamaka Rum Distillery produces rum using traditional methods, which involve fermenting and distilling sugarcane juice. The process begins with the harvesting of sugarcane, which is grown on the distillery’s own farm as well as on neighboring farms.
The sugarcane is crushed to extract the juice, which is then mixed with yeast to begin the fermentation process. The fermented juice, or “wash,” is then distilled in copper pot stills, which separate the alcohol from the water and impurities.
The resulting rum is then aged in oak barrels, which give it its distinctive flavor and color. The aging process can take anywhere from a few months to several years, depending on the type of rum being produced.
